We invite you to join us for the album pre-release of Modern Vampire’s Midnight Pine.
MIDNIGHT PINE is a record that delivers big ideas through small stories. Inspired by a small town in the West Country, Nathan Cable and Ruth Shave tell bittersweet stories contemplating the quieter moments of people’s lives. Cable’s modest storytelling and stark acoustic arrangements are anchored by Shave’s mellow and broad synthesizers, forming the sound of MODERN VAMPIRES. The duo has self-produced a collection of songs that resonate with an aching restlessness.
The debut album was written and recorded over a period of ten months with only one aim in mind: to serve justice to the real people that lie behind the stories. The pair laid down ground rules at the beginning of the process, limiting themselves to a handful of instruments that would only add scope and depth to the kitchen sink drama and grey backdrops in these West Country stories, leaving the lyric at the forefront of the arrangements. In order to capture the reflectiveness and intimacy of the stories, the entire record was recorded live in bedrooms and living rooms during the small hours of the morning, using only a 4-track tape machine. The record’s raw tangibility is a result of these decisions, which challenged them to focus on the characters’ hearts and souls and deliver meaningful performances. Midnight Pine is a tender and quietly political collection of vignettes.
