Giraffe Sessions present an intimate night of acoustic West-African griot music featuring a new collaboration between virtuoso Kora player / vocalist, Kadialy Kouyate and renowned pianist Al MacSween.
Kadialy Kouyate is a musician, a singer songwriter inspired by the West African Griot repertoire. Born into the great line of Kouyate Griots in Southern Senegal, Kadialy’s mesmerising kora playing and singing style has been appreciated in many prestigious venues as both a soloist and in numerous ensembles. Since his arrival in the UK Kadialy has played a significant part in enriching the London musical scene with his griot legacy. He has been teaching the Kora at SOAS university for the past decade and has also been involved in countless musical projects both as a collaborator and a session musician.
Al MacSween‘s versatile and innovative approach to the piano and his ability to communicate through different musical languages has led to collaborations with world-renowned musicians from a staggering array of musical traditions, from Afro-Cuban, West-African, blues and jazz to Indian classical music, Celtic folk, Arabic music and flamenco. Al has worked with artists including Omar Puente, Shankar Mahadevan, Ruby Turner, Dennis Rollins, Bickram Ghosh, Abram Wilson, Claude Deppa, Reem Kelani, Tony Kofi, Nazim Ziryab, Niladri Kumar, Bugalu Foundation, London Community Gospel Choir and many more. He is founder of the international world music collective, ‘Kefaya’ which he runs alongside guitarist Giuliano Modarelli.
