John Workman’s exhibition draws on the art of the past, from the rich heritage of classical Western painting to all sorts of ephemera and photographs. He deploys these in nostalgic, almost theatrical, installations. Muxima has invited John to create a piece of bespoke art work for the main window facing the street. The glass frontage is painted as a cartouche, framing a pair of elegant eighteenth-century figures. Through the glass, you can see the Roman Road street market going about its usual business. The exhibition extends throughout the cafe with other scenes installed in illuminated metal boxes: an old postcard of downtown Casablanca, a 1960s boating lake… In some of the metal boxes there is no background scene at all, only the light itself, framed by black paint to reveal reverse silhouettes.
